**The following information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division is investigating an officer-involved shooting which occurred at a gym in Hollywood.
On October 29, 2018, around 9:00 a.m., Hollywood Area Officer Edward Agdeppa, Serial No. 41000, and his partner responded to a radio call at a gym in the 6300 block of Sunset Boulevard. The officers were directed to the suspect, later identified as Albert Ramon Dorsey, who was in a male locker room area. Prior to the officer’s arrival, Dorsey had showered and when officers arrived he was naked. Dorsey was uncooperative and a physical altercation ensued when the officers attempted to handcuff him. One of the officers used a TASER to attempt to take Dorsey into custody. During the altercation, Dorsey was able to gain control of an officer’s TASER, he punched and broke Officer Agdeppa’s nose, and forced his partner to the ground and repeatedly struck her in the face with his fists, resulting in Officer Agdeppa firing at Dorsey. Dorsey was still in possession of the TASER.
Dorsey was struck by gunfire and determined to be deceased by personnel from the Los Angeles Fire Department. Both officer’s sustained injuries to their head and face area from the altercation and were treated at a local hospital.
LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. Representatives from the Office of the Inspector General and Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division responded and monitored the investigation.
The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with the LAPD’s policies and procedures. Additionally, representatives from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office who responded to the scene will review the subsequent FID investigation; evidence collected and witness statements to determine if the force used by the officer(s) violated any criminal laws.
