Commander Jonathan Pinto was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Department in 1996. Prior to joining the LAPD, he served in the United States Marine Corps for seven years as a military police officer and as a criminal investigator. After graduating from the Police Academy, he was assigned to Rampart Division. He then transferred to Southwest Area as a police officer and worked a variety of assignments including patrol, bike patrol, footbeats, and as a training officer. He transferred to Harbor Area and was assigned as a Senior Lead Officer.
In 2005, he was promoted to Sergeant. His supervisory assignments included Southeast, Rampart, and Southwest. His experience included patrol, gang supervisor, and assistant watch commander. He was the Officer in Charge of the University Park Taskforce in Southwest Area, which involved working in collaboration with USC’s Department of Public Safety. In 2014, Pinto was promoted to Lieutenant and was assigned to Newton Area as a watch commander, and later as the Officer in Charge of the Newton Gang Impact Team. He later transferred as the Officer in Charge at Employee Relations Group.
Commander Pinto was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2017 and was assigned as the Commanding Officer of Hollywood Patrol Division. In August of 2018, Captain Pinto was transferred to the newly formed Innovation & Strategic Planning Division. In June 2019, Commander Pinto was assigned to South Traffic Division as the Commanding Officer. In February 2021, Commander Pinto was transferred to Training Division as the Commanding Officer and Director of the Police Recruit Academy.
In April of 2022, He was promoted to the rank of Commander and was assigned as the Assistant Commanding Officer, Operations-West Bureau. In February 2023, Commander Pinto became the Assistant Commander Officer, Operations-South Bureau, overseeing Bureau operations for South Bureau Homicide Division, Southwest, 77th Street, Southeast and Harbor Areas. In January 2024, Commander Pinto was selected as the Department’s Employee Relations Administrator.
Commander Pinto received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Management from Union Institute and University. He obtained his master’s degree from the University of Southern California in Executive Management of Leadership. He also graduated from the LAPD West Point Leadership program, Sherman Block Supervisor Leadership Institute, and the Senior Management Institute for Police. Commander Pinto is committed to strengthening the relationships between the Department and the communities he serves.
