As a member of the Los Angeles Police Department, Captain Smith takes great pride in having the opportunity of serving all Angelinos with purpose, compassion and in partnership.
Captain Smith joined the Department in 1992 and has enjoyed a variety of assignments as a police officer to include Newton Street and 77th Street. In 1998, he became an Element Member, of the “Elite” Metropolitan Division and was assigned to C Platoon. His experience included patrol, special problems units, surveillance, narcotics and gangs. From Metropolitan Division, Smith was promoted to the rank of Detective and assigned to Hollywood Division as a Gang/Homicide investigator. He eventually promoted to the rank of Detective supervisor in the Rampart area. In 2005, Smith promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to Foothill Division. Before leaving Foothill Division he reverted to the rank of Detective in which he would serve as a supervisor of the Fugitive Warrant Section, Operations Valley Bureau, Counter Terrorism and Special Operations Bureau, Surveillance Support Section before promoting to the rank of Lieutenant in 2016.
As a Lieutenant, Smith was assigned as a Watch-Commander in Devonshire Division, Office of Operations as the Officer-in-Charge of Evaluation and Administrative Section then as the Special Assistant to the Chief of Police assigned to The Community Relations Section.
In 2018, Smith was promoted to the rank of Captain, assigned to the Mission Area Community Police Station. In 2020, assigned to the Foothill Area Community Police Station and in 2022, currently assigned to the 77th Street Area Community Police Station. Captain Smith oversees the day-to-day patrol operations with over 300 sworn and civilian personnel.
Smith was born in Los Angeles and spent his childhood growing up in the Rampart Area of Los Angeles before moving to La Crescenta, California. Smith is the very proud father of a daughter and son.
Captain Smith earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. He has also graduated from the WestPoint Executive Leadership Program and the Sherman Block Leadership Institute.
