A restoration candidate is a former L.A.P.D. officer that has left the Department for three years or less and wants to come back, but still has a valid POST certificate that has not yet expired. This candidate will start the Hiring Process at the Physical Abilities Test. This candidate will go through a shortened Academy and will come in at P-II status.

You must meet all of the requirements for a Police Officer and you will have to complete the Personal Qualifications Essay, physical abilities test, background interview and investigation, polygraph, department interview, medical evaluation, and psychological evaluation before being certified and appointed.
The lateral program includes an expedited testing process and an abbreviated training and orientation program.
Your vacation time was paid out to you when you left the Department. Consequently, you would not get your vacation time back. Your sick time was lost when you left the Department. However, you will be given a new vacation and sick time bank upon your restoration.
Upon returning to the Department (Restoration), all candidates will be sworn in at the rank of Police Officer (PO) II. Each restoration candidate will be required to complete a probationary period of between 6 to 18 months. The total time of probation will vary from candidate to candidate depending upon length of time separated and amount of training needed.
However, employees who separated as PO's II will receive a salary commensurate with their last pay step. Employees that separated, as POs III/Detectives/Sergeants will receive a salary commensurate with top-step PO II pay.

Each restoration candidate will go through a refresher course in the academy, which is approximately 152 hours of in-service mode training. Probation will last up to 18 months;- 6 months after Phase 3 probation has been achieved.
You can complete a “wish list” for your assignment while on probation, and another list for your assignment after completion of probation.
Yes, you will receive your same serial number and the Department will try to accommodate returning your same badge number, but you are not guaranteed the same badge.

A rehire candidate is a former L.A.P.D. officer that has left the Department for more than three years and has an expired POST certificate. This candidate will have to complete the full eight-step hiring process, starting with the PQE, and will have to go through the entire seven-month Academy. This candidate will come in at a P-I status and starting pay will depend on their law enforcement experience just like a lateral candidate.
If the rehire candidate goes through the “POST Re-qualification Course", on their own time and cost, they will also be required to complete the full eight-step hiring process. However, the rehire candidate will have a shortened Academy and will come in at P-II status.
