Captain Mario Mota was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in June of 1995. During his career, he has worked a variety of assignments to include Northeast Division, Wilshire Division, two tours in Narcotics Division, one in an undercover capacity working the West-Bureau Buy Team and the second as a detective assigned to West Bureau Narcotics – Field Enforcement Section.
In 1999, Mota was promoted to a Police Officer III and worked Vice in Newton Division. Later in 2000, he promoted to the rank of Detective and was assigned to Narcotics Division. In 2002, Mota transferred to Rampart Division where he spent nearly 11 ½ years as a detective working various assignments from a Detective 1 to Detective 3. While assigned to Rampart, Mota worked the following investigative tables; Homicide, Robbery, Major Assault Crimes, Gang Detectives and Burglary / Property Crimes Table.
In 2006, he promoted to supervisor and was the Officer in Charge of the Receiving Stolen Property Unit and the Joint Violent Crime Task Force with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
In 2008, Mota promoted to Detective 3 and worked the Burglary Table and Property Crimes for five years. In 2013, Mota served as the Bureau Detective Coordinator at Operations-West Bureau and worked directly for three different deputy chiefs. While assigned to Operations-West Bureau, Mota also served as the Bureau Gang Coordinator for one year.
In 2016, he promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned to Hollywood Area as a Patrol Watch Commander and later, served as the Administrative Lieutenant. In 2018, Mota promoted to Lieutenant II and has the distinction of being an Adjutant at the Office of Special Operations, Office of Support Services and Office of Operations.
In July of 2021, Mota was promoted to the rank of Captain and returned to Rampart as the Patrol Commanding Officer. In January of 2022, Captain Mota was reassigned to Metropolitan Division as the Assistant Commanding Officer and in October of 2023, became the Commanding Officer of Metropolitan Division. In May 2024, Captain Mota was reassigned to Emergency Services Division.
Captain Mota was born in Tijuana, Mexico and raised in the South Los Angeles area before his family moved to the Inland Empire. Captain Mota’s parents were both born in the State of Zacatecas in Mexico. He enjoys traveling, spending time with his family, running, gardening and working on home improvement projects.
He is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Class 358, Post Management Leadership course, Public Safety Leadership Program – Safe Communities Institute and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Manufacturing.
