Los Angeles: Beginning February 19, 2005, the Los Angeles Police Department will host a 10-week military-style boot camp for at-risk juveniles between the ages of 12 and 17 years old. The program is part of LAPD’s Juvenile Impact Program. Many of the participants have been mandated to attend by court order. Their parents will also participate in parenting classes.
The parenting classes and the boot camp will be held at 77th Street police station officers. The overall goal of this program is to modify children and parents’ behavior and improve their communication skills and self-esteem. Police officers will provide instruction in drill and physical training at the boot camp. Los Angeles Unified School District teachers and counselors will train participants on communication and anger-management skills.
Parenting classes will focus on teaching parents proper discipline techniques, setting proper boundaries, and how to recognize gang and narcotics involvement.
This is the second year for the program at 77th Street Police Station. Class enrollment is usually 40 to 50 students, who attend on ten consecutive Saturdays, starting at 8 AM.
