Los Angeles: On Thursday, March 25, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, Chief William J. Bratton and Councilman Ed Reyes will announce a Gang Injunction against the Mara Salvatrucha street gang to abate public nuisance.
On March 9, 2004, the City Attorney’s Office filed an injunction against the Mara Salvatrucha street gang also known as MS in California Superior Court. The lawsuit alleges that the criminal activity of the MS gang constitutes a public nuisance based on evidence ranging from murders, robberies and drugs to drinking in public. Evidence also includes declarations by over 100 LAPD Officers, 135 photographs and records of 38 criminal convictions
The lawsuit seeks MS gang members to follow curfew rules and regulations and prohibits them from associating, driving, or appearing together in public view, within a specified "Safety Zone." The MS "Safety Zone" is made up of two areas located in the Hollywood, Wilshire, and Rampart Divisions of the LAPD. The injunction also prohibits gang members from possessing any gun, ammunition or illegal weapons, selling or possessing any illegal drug or related paraphernalia, trespassing, and demanding "rent" from businesses, whether legal or illegal for the "privilege" of doing business.
