On Sunday August 15, 2021 at around 8:15 p.m., an off-duty Mission Patrol Division officer unintentionally discharged a rifle in his garage while attempting to remove the magazine from the weapon. According to the officer, he was unaware the magazine contained live rounds when he pulled the charging handle to the rear to inspect the chamber. In doing so, the officer inadvertently chambered a live round. The officer then pressed the trigger and a Non-Tactical Unintentional Discharge (NTUD) occurred. The round travelled through the glass window in his garage and struck the front facing exterior stucco wall of an unoccupied residence.
No officers or civilians were injured as a result of this NTUD.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Office responded and turned the administrative investigation over the Force Investigation Division.
Force Investigation Division (FID) detectives responded and is investigating the incident.
