Stabbing Suspect and His Accessory Arrested

August 31, 2004

Los Angeles: West Valley Homicide Detectives have arrested the suspect wanted for the July 28, 2004, stabbing that occurred at the Encino home of John Ondrasik, the lead singer of the rock group Five For Fighting. The victim of the stabbing, 44 year-old Carlos Canton, was at the Ondrasik’s residence visiting his wife Alba Canton, who was employed on a part-time-basis by the Ondrasiks.
While in the residence, a suspect emerged from a bedroom closet and attacked Carlos Canton, stabbing him over a dozen times in the torso. The suspect got away after the stabbing. Alba Canton was not injured, however Carlos Canton was hospitalized in critical condition following the assault. He has since recovered and has been released from the hospital.
In the weeks following the attack, detectives noted several discrepancies in Alba’s version of the crime. It was learned that she had been having an affair with a security guard, who matched the description of the attempt murder suspect, and that following the attack, she waited nearly two hours before calling the police.
Detectives identified her boyfriend as 39 year-old Eduardo Antonio Garcia of Los Angeles.
The investigation also disclosed that Alba Canton and Eduardo Antonio Garcia were in the Ondrasik home alone, when Alba’s husband Carlos unexpectedly arrived at the house to take her to dinner. While Alba gave her husband a tour of the residence, Garcia, who had hid in a closet, emerged from the closet and stabbed Carlos Canton. Alba Canton then waited two hours before calling the police. She then withheld the identity of the suspect, allowing him to escape.
On August 30, 2004, detectives arrested Garcia in Encino. Alba Canton was arrested later that same day at an Encino home where she was employed as a housekeeper.
Eduardo Antonio Garcia was booked for attempted murder and is being held on $500,000.00 bail at the Van Nuys Jail. Alba Canton was booked for accessory to attempted murder and is being held on $250,000.00 bail at the Van Nuys Jail. The case will be presented the District Attorney’s Office later this week for formal filing consideration.
