Los Angeles: On Friday, December 5, 2003, about 9:20 p.m., West Valley Area patrol officers Michael O’Conner and Oscar Bocanegra were at the Tokyo Princess Inn Hotel located in the 17400 block of Ventura Boulevard. The officers were conducting an investigation of a possible stolen vehicle of an unoccupied Toyota pickup truck. The vehicle did not have a front license plate and a computer inquiry revealed that the rear license plate had been reported lost or stolen.
During the investigation, the officers approached the hotel clerk in an attempt to locate the driver. While doing so, the officers observed the driver, George Atkinson, walking towards the Toyota pickup truck. Officer O’Conner attempted to detain Atkinson who resisted and led the officers in a foot pursuit East on Ventura Boulevard. As the officers reached Andasol Avenue South of Ventura Boulevard, Atkinson pulled out a pistol from his waistband and pointed it at both officers. Both Officers fearing for their life, shot Atkinson striking him multiple times. He was then taken into custody without further incident. Atkinson’s weapon was later determined to be a replica.
Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics responded and transported Atkinson to a local hospital were he was treated for his wounds. Atkinson is listed in stable condition. Robbery-Homicide Detectives responded and arrested George Atkinson for 245 (D) 1 P.C. (Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer).
