"New Conference in Southeast Area Regarding Gun Violence"
Los Angeles: A news conference will be held at the Metropolitan Dispatch floor conference room to discuss the incidents of gun violence in Southeast Area. There were three murders this past Wednesday, in a 6-hour period.
28 year-old Sergio Soto was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting at 92nd Street and Holmes Ave. This case was gang-related. Detectives are pursuing leads in this case.
29 year-old Julius Carr was shot and killed inside The Nickerson Gardens Public Housing Development. This case is gang-related and is related to an on-going gang conflict within the Housing Development.
18 year-old Sergio Loosen was shot to death as he and a friend walked home from bible study. The murder occurred in the 10400 block of South Grandee Avenue. There were no witnesses to this shooting.
Homicide detectives are seeking the public’s assistance in locating witnesses to these shootings. All of these shootings occurred on public streets during daylight hours.
On Saturday, October 4, 2003, suspects armed with an assault rifle stood in the middle of the street in the 400 block of East 93rd Street and opened fire on a residence. Over 40 shots were fired resulting in the death of 21 year-old James Edward Thomas and 23 year-old Brandy Gunn. Both victims were inside the residence that the barrage of gunfire was intended for.
On Sunday, October 5, 2003, 6 year-old DeAngelo Beck was in a car driven by his mother and occupied by his two brothers 15 and 12 years-old. The family was about to enter the driveway to their home in the 600 block of East 87th Place. Suspects in a black mid size vehicle drove by and began shooting at the family’s vehicle. The suspect’s then fled the area in their vehicle. Six year-old DeAngelo was struck by the gunfire and is currently struggling for his life. The case is believed to be gang-related.
Assault type weapons were used in many of these shootings. The public’s assistance is needed to solve these crimes. Detectives are actively pursuing leads in all these cases.
