Los Angeles: The community of Sun Valley and surrounding cities in the San Fernando Valley are a meeting place for illegal street racing. Street racing has been a problem in the San Fernando Valley dating back to the 1960’s. Crowds drawn to this racing activity can number over 400.
Since January of this year there have been several traffic collisions directly related to illegal street racing. Four people have died in accidents caused by high-speed illegal street races. Getting these drivers and their cars off the street will save lives. Under a new City ordinance 41.70.2 LAMC, which went into effect on July 28, 2003, the LAPD can now seize illegal street-racing vehicles.
On Saturday, August 30, 2003, The Los Angeles Police Department’s CECATS Unit (Community Effort to Combat Auto Theft) and Valley Traffic Division conducted an illegal street racing task force. During this task force 6 people were arrested and 2 illegal street racing vehicles were seized, a 1989 and 1990 Chevy Camaro. The below listed individuals were arrested for the following crimes;

Defendant 1:
21 year-old, Pedro Cabrera, a resident of Sun Valley, arrested for Vehicle Code Section 23109 (A), Street Racing.

Defendant 2:
20 year-old, Victor Raul Nunez, a resident of Sylmar, arrested for Vehicle Code Section 23109 (A), Street Racing.

Defendant 3:
19 year-old, Isidro Ocampo, a resident of Pacoima, arrested for Vehicle Code Section 23109 (B), Aiding and Abetting Illegal Street Racing

Defendant 4:
18 year-old, Francisco Javier Ocampo, a resident of Pacoima, arrested for LAMC Section 47.15 (A), Spectator of a Speed Contest

Defendant 5:
23 year-old, Vincente Valdivia Ramos, a resident of Idaho, arrested for LAMC Section 47.15 (A), Spectator of a Speed Contest

Defendant 6:
20 year-old, Esteban Garcia Ortega, a resident of Sun Valley, arrested for LAMC Section 47.15 (A), Spectator of a Speed Contest

The City Attorney’s Office, Department of Transportation and LA City Council Members have taken an active part in assisting the LAPD in enforcing the illegal street racing laws. Many more "Illegal Street Racing" task forces will be conducted where citations will be written, arrests will be made, and cars will be confiscated.
