Chilean Mayors to Visit Los Angeles

 
Los Angeles: On September 22 through 26, 2003, a group of prominent Chilean Mayors, in conjunction with the Manhattan Institute, will be visiting Los Angeles. The purpose of the visit is to see, firsthand, the different innovative crime fighting initiatives being implemented in Los Angeles. The mayors will be especially interested in our efforts to deal with gang violence and drug problems. They are also interested in how the Los Angeles Police Department collaborates with business improvement districts and the faith community. Gang identification among young people, drug use and trafficking are increasing in Chile at alarming rates. The delegates are also focusing on urban reform.
Through its inter-American Policy Exchange, the Manhattan Institute is working directly with local government leaders, faith-based and other non-government organizations, the business community and concerned citizens to strengthen civil society efforts that provide unique and innovative approaches to promote stronger and safer communities. The Manhattan Institute has contributed, over the years, by arranging productive meetings for various groups so they can learn firsthand about successful initiatives and return to their homes, not only with ideas, but operational knowledge of how to begin to institute change.
