"Bullets Strike Pregnant Mother – UPDATE"
Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Area Homicide Detectives are investigating the shooting of two Los Angeles residents, one who was seven months pregnant.
On Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at about 11:30 p.m., 26 year old Amelia Tamara Ford of Los Angeles was a passenger in a car driven by an unidentified 27 year-old male companion. Traveling Northbound on Vermont Avenue, crossing 46th Street, shots rang out from a nearby building at the moving vehicle. As the car came to a stop on West 43rd Street, the driver and pregnant passenger were slumped over, both victims of gunshot wounds. The victims were taken to a local hospital. Ford, critically injured, was placed on life support and subsequently pronounced dead by attending physicians. The male driver is listed in stable condition. Hospital emergency personnel delivered Ford’s seven-month fetus at 2:35 a.m. and the baby is listed in critical condition.
The motive is not known and there are no suspects in custody.
UPDATE: The victim, Amelia Tamara Ford, was mistakenly reported to have died as a result of her injuries. Ms. Ford and her prematurely born child are both alive. Ford is currently reported to be in critical condition, while the child is listed in stable condition.
