LAPD Deputy Chief Assigned to Home

 
Los Angeles: In October of 2002, an allegation came to the attention of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) that a member of the Department had engaged in past criminal conduct. Naturally, anytime such an allegation is made, the LAPD takes it very seriously and conducts the appropriate criminal investigation.
As a result of this allegation, an extensive criminal investigation into the actions of Deputy Chief David Kalish was conducted by the Special Operations Section of Internal Affairs Group. All of the conduct allegedly occurred during the late 1970’s when he held the rank of Police Officer.
On Monday, March 24, 2003, the LAPD submitted the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has been involved in this criminal investigation from the earliest stages. They are reviewing all the evidence and will make a determination as to whether to proceed with a criminal filing.
It is important to stress the following points:

The LAPD received these serious allegations and investigated them fully.
Deputy Chief Kalish has been relieved of his police powers and assigned to his home pending the outcome of the District Attorney’s filing decision.
The Police Department will be conducting a separate internal, administrative investigation after the conclusion of the criminal investigation.

Consistent with current Department policy and practice, the LAPD will not make any further comments on the internal administrative investigation or pending potential criminal charge against Deputy Chief Kalish. We will refer all questions to the District Attorney’s Office.
