Officer-Involved Shooting in Southeast Area

Los Angeles: On November 16, 2002, at approximately 4:30 a.m., three Los Angeles Police Department officers, assigned to Southeast Area were in the rear parking lot of the Southeast Area Station when they heard gunfire. The officers responded to the area of the gunfire, 108th Street and Broadway. They observed several pedestrians outside the Chosen Few Motorcycle Club. As the officers stopped in front of the location, they observed a suspect, identified as Michael Huntley, 29 old years, in a 1985 Oldsmobile, Cutlass, shoot at club patrons who were standing on the sidewalk. As the officers exited their vehicle, they observed a second suspect, a male Black, wearing a Chosen Few Club jacket, point a gun at them. Officer Francis Coughlin (Serial No. 32353, 7 years with the Department, 33 years old), in fear for his safety and that of his partners, fired one round from his 9mm pistol at the suspect. The suspect, apparently not injured by the gunfire, ran into the motorcycle club building. Officers were unable to identify the second suspect who ran inside the building. He remains outstanding at this time. Responding units detained the individuals at the scene. Two handguns were recovered at the scene.
Other responding officers stopped and arrested suspect Huntley as he was attempting to flee the scene in his 1985 Oldsmobile, Cutlass. He was booked violation of Section 245 (a) 2 of the Penal Code, Assault with a Deadly Weapon. No officers, victims or suspects were injured as a result of this incident.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing and is being conducted by Robbery-Homicide and Critical Incident Investigation Divisions.
