Los Angeles: Today, the Los Angeles Police Commission selected retired Deputy Chief Martin H. Pomeroy to serve as the temporary Chief until a permanent Chief is selected later in the year. Chief Pomeroy was chosen from a group of highly qualified individuals who all represented stellar careers within the Los Angeles Police Department, either in the past or present.
Commission President Rick J. Caruso stated, "Martin Pomeroy’s extensive experience in successfully working with the community, elected officials and employees, made him stand out in a field of excellent candidates. He exemplifies many of the qualities we would like to see in a permanent Chief. He is committed to reform and the civil oversight of this Commission and has the ability to effectively motivate the troops along with completely understanding community needs."
Martin Pomeroy retired as a Deputy Chief from the Los Angeles Police Department in December, 2000. Throughout his career, he held community policing, problem solving and quality of life issues as priorities in his approach to law enforcement. He has a strong track record of establishing goals and executing strategies to achieve enhanced service to the community.
As a Commanding Officer since 1983, Chief Pomeroy held positions at Southeast Detective Division, Wilshire Patrol Division, Juvenile Division, Support Services Bureau, Narcotics Group, Criminal Intelligence Group, Operations – Valley Bureau, and finally at Headquarters Bureau. In addition, Chief Pomeroy served as the Department’s Employee Relations Administrator.
Chief Pomeroy’s career is highlighted with well-known accomplishments. In 1994, Chief Pomeroy commanded all LAPD disaster response operations in the San Fernando Valley following the Northridge earthquake. In 1997, he was the senior LAPD official on-scene at the North Hollywood Bank of America robbery and shootout. In 2000, he was assigned the immense task of negotiating the Department of Justice Consent Decree on behalf of LAPD. In the same year, he also served as the Department Commander for the Democratic National Convention, which was lauded as a complete success in terms of public safety.
While Chief Pomeroy retired out of state, he will reside in Los Angeles for the duration of his appointment.
