On November 29, 2022, around 12:12 p.m., 77th Street Area Narcotics Enforcement Detail (NED) and Gang Enforcement Detail (GED) personnel were serving a search warrant for illegal marijuana cultivation at an abandoned tile warehouse, located in the 600 block of South Manchester Avenue.
As the team of officers were searching the exterior courtyard of the location, they encountered an open door to the rear of the business and could hear dogs barking inside. Moments later, two Rottweilers ran out of the door growling and quickly charged toward the team of officers, who were “stacked up” in a confined area and unable to successfully redeploy. In an effort to protect himself and others around him, one of the officers discharged his firearm several times, striking both dogs with gunfire. The dogs retreated to a corner of the property and were later contained by a representative from the Department of Animal Care and Control.
The dogs were ultimately transported from the scene to a local animal shelter, where they are currently receiving medical care. The business was unoccupied at the time of the incident and the owner of the dogs has yet to be determined.
77th Street NED personnel eventually completed the service of their search warrant and recovered a large quantity of marijuana plants that were growing inside the premises.
No officers were injured during this incident.
Detectives from Force Investigation Division responded to the scene and will be investigating the animal shooting.
