Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division will be conducting a Press Conference to discuss the prevention of fatal automobile vs. pedestrian traffic collisions.
Year to date, there has been a total of ten fatal traffic collisions in the Department’s Operations South Bureau as compared to five in 2001, which none involved pedestrians. Of the ten fatal collisions this year, six collisions involved pedestrians, and four were reported as hit and runs.
Hosting the Press Conference will be Commander Mark Leap, the Department’s Traffic Coordinator, Captain Ann Young, Commanding Officer of South Traffic Division, and various uniform and detective personnel assigned to South Traffic Division.
Also attending the conference will be surviving family members of loved ones who have recently lost their lives in collisions, which have occurred in the South Los Angeles Community.
Crime Alert Information regarding a fatal hit and run collision that occurred on February 23, 2002, which resulted in the death of Rena Fields, a 39 year-old resident of Los Angeles, will be presented. Photographs of the vehicle being sought will be displayed, Fields’ sister and daughters will be in attendance, and plan to provide statements pleading for the public’s help in locating the hit and run vehicle and driver. Issues of public safety and traffic awareness will also be discussed.
