LAPD Chief Moore’s Statement on Organized Retail Crimes Task Force – NR23247lr

Los Angeles: Today we announced the establishment of a multi-agency task force made up of our law enforcement partners and prosecutors dedicated to address a pressing concern within our community — the striking increase in the incidents of violent organized retail theft. As Chief of Police, my primary duty is to ensure the safety and security of our community members and businesses. With that commitment in mind, we are taking an aggressive stance to tackle the escalating issue head-on.

Today, we introduced the Organized Retail Crimes Task Force, a specialized team dedicated solely to combating this growing problem. The task force will consist of highly trained detectives with expertise in theft prevention, sophisticated investigative techniques, and community engagement. Their mission is multi-fold: to eliminate the recent incidents of violent robberies at retail establishments, reduce incidents of organized retail theft, and foster a safer shopping environment for everyone.

Organized retail theft is a $30 billion problem in our country. Its impact not only affects businesses financially, but also has a broader impact on the overall sense of well-being of our community. Most troubling recently has been the escalation of individuals using weapons, fear and terror as they attack retail establishments.

We understand that addressing this issue requires a comprehensive approach that involves collaboration between law enforcement, prosecutors, local businesses, and the public. The Organized Retail Crimes Task Force will also work closely with retailers to enhance security measures, share information, and develop strategies to deter these crimes.

Moreover, community involvement is vital to our success. We encourage residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and partner with us in this endeavor. Together, we can create an environment where our streets and businesses are safe from the scourge of organized retail theft.
