Boyle Heights, Los Angeles: On August 12, 2023, at around 5:00 p.m., Los Angeles Police Department Hollenbeck Area uniformed officers responded to a radio call of a shooting with a victim down inside the Recreation Center at Evergreen Park, located at 2844 East 2nd Street.
The victim in this case, Alfonso Ramos, a 16-year-old resident of Los Angeles, was treated at scene and transported to USC-Medical Center by Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) personnel. Unfortunately, Ramos succumbed to his injuries and died at scene. Central Bureau Homicide responded and assumed investigative responsibility of the case.
The subsequent investigation led to the identification of two suspects. One of the suspects was identified as 26-year-old Michael Monarrez. The second suspect was identified as a 14-year-old juvenile. Detectives were making investigative efforts to locate the pair and effect an arrest, when a second incident occurred.
On August 17, 2023, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Hollenbeck Area uniformed officers responded to the 500 block of Lorena Street for a shooting investigation. When the officers arrived they discovered a victim, identified as Fermin Ruelas, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. LAFD personnel responded and treated Ruelas at scene, however, Ruelas succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased at scene.
Central Bureau Homicide responded and assumed investigative responsibility for this case.
During this investigation, detectives determined Monarrez was responsible for the Ruelas’ murder. Monarrez was arrested nearby shortly after the murder of Ruelas. On August 18, 2023, the juvenile offender in the Ramos’ murder was arrested by officers from Hollenbeck Area.
The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office filed (2) counts of murder on Monarrez. A petition for murder was filed by the District Attorney’s Office on the juvenile for the murder of Ramirez.
