WHY:
September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and an opportunity for law enforcement agencies across the globe to reflect on suicide within their ranks. Suicide rates among law enforcement personnel are significantly higher than the general population and usually double the rate of line of duty deaths by other causes. Prevention is everyone’s responsibility, and it begins in the months and even years leading up to a suicide. For that reason, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is expanding its focus to include law enforcement mental health and overall wellness.

On Saturday, September 23, 2023, the Department will host the Heart of LAPD Law Enforcement Mental Health and Suicide Awareness 5k Walk to cultivate awareness and connect LAPD families with wellness resources and support services. Additionally, the event will help to end the silence around law enforcement mental health and to smash the stigma of seeking help.
