WHY:
On July 3, 2023, around 9:08 p.m., a fatal hit and run traffic collision occurred on Fries Avenue just north of G Street in Wilmington. The victim, Juan Jose Areyan, was standing in the two-way turn lane of Fries Street, lighting fireworks. A vehicle traveling northbound Fries at a high rate of speed, ran a stop sign, drove down the center of the street in the two-way left turn lane and struck Areyan.

The force of the impact caused Areyan to be thrown 121 feet north on Fries Avenue, where he landed underneath the front end of a vehicle exiting a nearby grocery store. The suspect vehicle continued northbound Fries Avenue making a right, eastbound turn on to Anaheim Street, failing to stop and render aid which is required by California law.

South Traffic Detectives arrested the suspect and will be announcing details of the case and discuss formal charges that were filed against the suspect. Detectives will also release portions of the collision captured on video.
