“DEDICATION OF A MEMORIAL STAR AT HOLLYWOOD POLICE STATION”

WHAT:
The Los Angeles Police Department and the Citizens of Hollywood are honoring a Hollywood Police Officer who died in the line of duty. On May 27, 1992, Officer Joe Rios, Serial Number 24216, was assigned to the Hollywood Division, Bicycle Detail. Officer Rios was working in full uniform with protective gear. At 6:45 p.m., Officer Rios was riding his Police Department bicycle westbound on Sunset Boulevard when a vehicle exited a parking lot striking Officer Rios’ bicycle.

Officer Rios was transported to Cedars Sinai Hospital where he was treated for a cerebral concussion. On January 20, 1993, Officer Rios passed away from a grand mal seizure and cardiac arrest. On May 29, 1996, Officer Rios’ death was amended as a line-of-duty occurrence.

The Los Angeles Police Department is taking this opportunity to acknowledge Officer Rios dedication to duty and the ultimate sacrifice paid to the Citizens of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Police Department. A memorial star will be dedicated in his honor in front of Hollywood Community Police Department, 1358 North Wilcox Avenue, Los Angeles.
