Southeast Officers Assist Local School

Southeast Area Community Relations Officers (CRO), under the supervision of Sergeant Ted Maillet, received information that San Miguel, a small catholic school within the South Central Los Angeles area (Watts), was in desperate need of classroom space due to over crowding. The situation had become so bad that classes had to be taught either outside or in the hallways of the school.

The school tried unsuccessfully to obtain funding or assistance for the extra classroom space through a number of sources, but were denied. The situation appeared hopeless until Los Angeles Police Officers from the Southeast Area CRO office learned of the school’s plight. Sgt. Ted Maillet contacted various LAPD sources and was able to obtain two trailers from Metropolitan Division’s SWAT team, which had previously been using the trailers for training purposes. Through the coordinated efforts of Southeast CRO and SWAT officers, they dismantled and moved the trailers to San Miguel school, where they are currently in the process of reassembling the trailers for classroom use. All of these officers volunteered their off-duty time to accomplish this feat.
