On Tuesday, October 19, 1999 at approximately 3:45 p.m. a fatal traffic collision occurred in the Sepulveda Pass near the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Mountain Gate Drive. A late model Toyota Corolla traveling southbound on Sepulveda Boulevard at a high rate of speed, lost control and drove into the opposing lanes of traffic. The Toyota collided with two oncoming vehicles, a late model BMW and a Toyota pickup. The Toyota Corolla continued into a power pole where the vehicle came to rest.
The driver was transported to Encino Medical Center by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel and a passenger was also transported by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel to UCLA Medical Center. Both the driver and passenger succumb to their injuries and were pronounced dead at the respective hospitals. The driver of the BMW was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The driver of the Toyota pickup and two passengers were transported by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel to Encino Medical Center and Tarzana Hospital where they were also treated for minor injuries.
Sepulveda Boulevard through the Sepulveda Pass was closed for approximately five hours for the on-scene investigation.
The deceased occupants of the Toyota Corolla were identified as brothers, the driver was Richard Tuazon 18 years of age and the passenger Jason Tuazon 16 years of age, both residents of the Westchester area of the City of Los Angeles.
The investigation is ongoing and West Traffic Division follow-up Detectives will be handling.
