LAPD Chief Choi’s Statement Passing of Civil Rights Pioneer Reverend James M. Lawson, Jr. NR24172mc

The Los Angeles Police Department is deeply saddened by the news of Reverend James M. Lawson, Jr.’s passing today. Reverend Lawson was a well-acclaimed civil rights leader and a distinguished university professor who based his teaching on Mahatma Gandhi’s nonviolent resistance tactics. In the 1960’s, Reverend Lawson worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., advocating for equality and civil rights for all. He also had roots in Los Angeles where he served as the pastor of Holman United Methodist Church for 25 years, from 1974 to 1999.

Reverend Lawson’s unwavering belief in nonviolence in the face of adversity is a guiding principle we should all aspire to follow. He lived a life for that was devoted to bettering the lives of others.

On behalf of the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Reverend Lawson. His profound impact on our country and the City of Los Angeles will serve as enduring legacy that will forever be etched in the history of human rights

Today, we recognize and honor the 95 years that he walked amongst us and his legacy will always be remembered.
