Victim Shot and Killed by Boyfriend

On Sunday, January 9, 2000, at approximately 8:10 p.m., Foothill Area patrol officers responded to a radio call of "Shots Fired in Progress," in the 12800 block of Maclay Street in Sylmar. The caller who identified himself as "Jose" stated he shot his girlfriend. The caller requested that police shoot him.

Upon arrival, the officers observed a male Hispanic, later identified as Jose Barrajas, a 24-year-old resident of Sylmar, standing at the front door of the residence, armed with a handgun. The suspect stated "Do your Job."

The officers attempted to speak to the suspect, but failed to gain compliance from him. In an effort to render aid to the victim, officers entered the residence and were able to take the suspect into custody. The victim, Lisa Lopez, a 20-year-old resident of Sylmar, died at the scene as the result of multiple gunshot wounds.

The weapon was found at the scene. The motive for the murder is unknown at this time.
