When the investment counselor opened his new office, he hired a moving company to ship furniture and art to the new location. The art included a favorite Andy Warhol print that he had owned for many years. An assistant from his office admonished the movers to be careful with the artwork because “it was very valuable.”
As often happens in cases like this, the theft of the Warhol was not discovered immediately. Many of the moving boxes remained unopened for several weeks until the owner settled into the new location.
During the subsequent investigation, information on the Warhol was added to the LAPD Art Theft Detail website, including its unique edition number.
Ten months later, the Warhol was surrendered to detectives by a bona fide purchaser after he discovered it was stolen when he saw it displayed on LAPD’s website while researching the artwork.
