Homicide Suspect Shoots at Officers NRF029-15jk

The officers involved in the below incident have been identified as Police Officer II Sergio Gramajo, Serial No. 39927, Police Officer II Michael Nguyen, Serial No. 40649, Police Officer II Hector Almeda, Serial No. 39529 and Police Officer II Heriberto Crisantos-Garcia, Serial No. 39541.

Los Angeles: On April 8, 2015, around 10:25 p.m., Hollenbeck Area patrol officers were in the area of 4th Street and Soto Street when they heard gunshots and observed a victim down. A suspect was seen running away and officers immediately requested additional resources and an ambulance for the victim.

Responding officers, including the LAPD helicopter set a perimeter to contain the suspect, who was later identified as Alberto Rodriguez. The helicopter located Rodriguez, who was seen running from the area and directed officers to his location. As the officers approached Rodriguez, he began shooting at them, resulting in an officer involved shooting.

The Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics rendered aid to the victim and Rodriguez who were later pronounced dead at scene. No officers were injured during this incident and a firearm was recovered at scene.

Force Investigation Division investigators responded to the incident and will conduct a thorough investigation of the officer involved shooting. The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Departments use-of-force policy, which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved-shooting.
