Severe Injury Hit and Run Traffic Collision NR20307dm

December 6, 2020

Los Angeles: Detectives
from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic Division
are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect
responsible for the Hit and Run traffic collision that severely
injured an 82-year-old man.

On December 4, 2020, around 10:35 a.m., the victim was seated on
his travel scooter, crossing north on Mott Street at Whittier
Boulevard, in a marked crosswalk. Prior to reaching the north curb,
a 2016 to 2020, Silver or Gray Mazda CX-5 turned left onto east
Whittier Boulevard from south Mott Street and collided with the
victim. The victim was knocked off his travel scooter onto the
asphalt. The male suspect driver of the Mazda CX-5 continued east
on Whittier Boulevard, dragging the travel scooter, then made a
right turn, south onto Orme Avenue where he stopped. A citizen in
the area approached and assisted in dislodging the scooter from
underneath the Mazda, unaware of the collision. After the scooter
was dislodged, the suspect re-entered the Mazda and fled south on
Orme Avenue, failing to stop and render aid and identify himself.
The suspect’s vehicle is likely to have front end damage.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported
the victim to a local hospital. He is listed in critical but stable
condition.

Drivers are reminded to drive at a safe speed and if you become
involved in a collision, you should pull over and stop as soon as
it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the
scene to identify yourself.

On April 15, 2015, the City Council amended the Los Angeles
Administrative Code and created a Hit and Run Reward Program Trust
Fund. A reward of up to $25,000 is available to community members
who provide information leading to the offender’s identification,
apprehension, and conviction or resolution through a civil
compromise.
