Fatal Hit-and-Run Collision in Newton Division NR21026jc

January 27, 2021

Los Angeles: Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Central Traffic Division (CTD) are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect and the suspect vehicle responsible for a fatal hit-and-run traffic collision.

On January 23, 2021, around 4:30 a.m, officers from CTD responded to Alameda Street and 22nd Street for a radio call of a traffic collision. The officers’ investigation revealed that a vehicle of unknown make and model had struck a Hispanic 33-year-old man, later identified as Anibal Macias Jr., as he was walking on the sidewalk. Mr. Macias Jr. was struck and then dragged onto the street. The hit-and-run driver did not stop and fled the scene, did not identify themselves, and did not render aid as required by law.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and provided medical treatment to Mr. Macias Jr., but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves.

On April 15, 2015, the City Council amended the Los Angeles Administrative Code and created a Hit and Run Reward Program Trust Fund. A reward of up to $50,000 is available to community members who provide information leading to the offender’s identification, apprehension, and conviction or resolution through a civil compromise.
