Captain Cliff Humphris was born in Chicago, Illinois. After just a few years in Chicago, he moved with his family to Southern California and was raised in Cerritos, California. He attended Cerritos High School and California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. Later, went on to University of Southern California (USC) where he received his Executive Master of Leadership from the Price School of Public Policy.
Captain Humphris was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Department in October of 1994. During his career, he worked a variety of assignments at nine different community police stations within three different geographic bureaus. At the rank of Police Officer, his assignments included Patrol Officer, Foot Beat officer, CRASH Officer, Gang Officer and Gang Investigator.
In 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to Hollywood Division. At Hollywood Division, he worked as a Field Supervisor, Assistant Watch Commander, Watch Commander, and Prostitution Enforcement Detail Supervisor. Captain Humphris was an integral part at Hollywood Division and throughout his tenure as a Sergeant he also work at other Police Stations. At 77th Street, he worked as a Field Supervisor, Watch Commander, Special Problems Unit Supervisor, Gang Unit Supervisor, Gang Unit Assistant OIC, Assistant Vice OIC, and Vice OIC. At Hollenbeck Division, he worked as an Assistant Watch Commander. At Metropolitan Division, he was a Squad Leader supervisor for C-Platoon, Captain’s Adjutant in A-Platoon, and a K-9 Unit supervisor and K-9 Unit Assistant OIC in Metro K-9. He also holds dual status as a Detective.
In 2015, he promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned as a Lieutenant Watch Commander at Rampart Division, Lieutenant Watch Commander at Central Division, Detective Watch Commander at Central Detective Division, Officer in Charge (Acting) of the Gang Impact Team at Central Division, Lieutenant OIC, Bureau Gang Coordinator at Operations-Central Bureau, and as a Deputy Chief’s Adjutant at Professional Standards Bureau.
In 2022, he was promoted to the rank of Captain of Police and was assigned as the Commanding Officer of Newton Patrol Division.
Captain Humphris also earned a degree certificate from the University of Southern California, Price School of Public Policy, in their Safe Communities Institute (SCI) Program, and graduated from the Sherman Block Leadership Institute (SLI), and from the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Point Leadership Program.
Captain Humphris supports and recognizes the value of strong leadership, integrity and transparency, the importance of building partnerships through community trust and collaboration, and through investing in our communities and our officers.
Captain Humphris enjoys spending his time with his wife, daughter and son, and enjoys a variety of athletic outdoor activities, that includes coaching his son’s baseball team.
