Captain Raul Jovel has had the privilege to serve the community members of Los Angeles over the past 27 years. As a police officer, he worked Rampart and Wilshire Divisions and proudly discharged the duties of Field Training Officer. As a Sergeant, he worked Southeast Division, Use of Force Review Division, Hollywood Division, and the elite Metropolitan Division in “C” Platoon. After promoting to Lieutenant, he was assigned to Newton Division where he served as a patrol watch commander, Detective Commanding Officer, and Gang Impact Team Officer-in-Charge. His last assignment as a Lieutenant was at Media Relations Division as the Officer in Charge of the Media Relations Section. After being promoted to Captain, Jovel has served as the Commanding Officer of Rampart Patrol Division, the Assistant Commanding Officer of the Department’s specialized Force Investigation Division and is currently the Commanding Officer of Central Area.
Captain Jovel grew up in the Southern California area. After graduating high school, he had the honor to serve in the United States Marine Corps as an enlisted infantryman. His tour of duty included deployments overseas. After completing his commitment honorably, he applied to the Los Angeles Police Department and attended the academy in September 1996.
Captain Jovel graduated Magna Cum Laude from California State University Los Angeles with a degree in Criminal Justice and from Woodbury University at Burbank, California with a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership. He has also graduated from the West Point Leadership Program, the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Law Enforcement Executive Development (LEEDA) Course.
