Captain Gary W. Walters is a Southern California native. He was born and raised in Anaheim. He attended the University of California in Irvine, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Ecology.
Walters was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Department on September 10, 1990. He started his career working North Hollywood Area. From there, Walters was assigned to Hollenbeck Area where he worked a variety of details including patrol, business community footbeat, drug enforcement, training officer, and gangs. Walters then was accepted into Metropolitan Division as an element member.
His duties at Metro included crime suppression, warrant service, dignitary protection, rapid deployment training, crowd control, and special criminal investigations. In 2002, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to 77th Area working patrol. He then advanced to Internal Affairs as an investigator in 2003.
In 2007, Walters was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to Rampart Area as a watch commander. In 2008, he was selected as the Adjutant to the Commanding Officer, Operations Central Bureau. He was promoted to Captain on April 24, 2011, and appointed as the Pacific Division Patrol Commanding Officer. Walters then was assigned as the 77th and then Rampart Patrol Division Commanding Officer prior to his promotion as the Commanding Officer of Air Support Division.
Walters has been married for 14 years and is the proud father of two children. He is active in his church and enjoys spending time with his family.
