WHY: Local Target Stores have reached out to LAPD-Topanga Division to participate with Community Heroes & Helpers Program. Senior Lead Officer Duke Dao would like to engage students from Hart Elementary School for “Shoe Shopping”. Officer Dao was a student at Hart School when he immigrated from Vietnam in 1981 at the age of 10. Officer Dao is currently the Senior Lead Officer of the community where he grew up.

It began with a $500 donation from one store and other stores wanted to join in. Weeks later, Officer Dao was contacted by Target Corporate Office regarding the growth of this event. Officer Dao received a Community Helpers & Heroes Grant for $5,000 to take 50 students from the Community, each student can spend $100 for shoes and more.

Twenty-five students from Hart Elementary have been selected from the ACHIEVE 3000 Program where students log into a computer to read and then take a comprehension quiz. The other 25 kids are going to be enrolled in the Topanga Youth Wrestling Program, to keep kids out of trouble, build self-esteem and friendships. This is part one of two. Next Tuesday will be part 2 with Topanga Youth kids.
