Shots Fired Police Call Evolves into Homicide Investigation

Los Angeles: On Sunday, March 31, 2002 at approximately 7:09 p.m., Los Angeles Police Department’s Foothill Area patrol officers responded to a radio call, "ADW, Shots Fired " on the 1100 block of Vanport Avenue in Lakeview Terrace. Responding LAPD officers were then directed by witnesses to a crime scene in front of that location.
The police investigation revealed that unknown suspects drove by the location in a dark colored van and asked a group of people where they were from. The suspects then fired numerous gunshots into the group, striking two females. The first shooting victim, Dawn Michelle Fick, a 21-year-old resident of Palmdale was struck in the head and transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. The second victim, a 15-year-old juvenile from Lancaster was struck in the lower extremities and transported to a local hospital, where she is in stable condition.
The motive is gang related. The suspects and weapon are not in custody.
