19-Year-Old Shot and Killed in Gang Violence

January 26, 2008

Los Angeles: A 19-year-old teen who stood amongst a group of gang members in a South Los Angeles street, was shot and killed early this morning, authorities said.

At around 12:40 a.m., officers were on routine patrol in the 100 block of West 110th Street, when they saw a group of men loitering in the middle of the street. Officers parked their vehicle nearby and got out to investigate. Moments before they approached the group, officers heard shots rang out. A gunman in the group had open fire and hit Richard Broussard who was the intended target.

Broussard was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Officers saw a man carrying a gun run from the group. Officers chased the man identified as 20-year-old, John Buckner, and took him into custody.

After a few leads, detectives arrested a 16-year-old juvenile also connected to the murder. Buckner’s bail is set at $1 million and the juvenile’s bail was set at no bail.

The motive of the shooting appears to be a gang dispute, detectives said.

Investigators continue to develop leads and look for witnesses.
