Los Angeles: Mission Division Patrol officers responded to an apartment in the 15500 block of Parthenia Avenue for a domestic violence radio call. The suspect was in the hallway, armed with two knives. The suspect charged the officers and they fired their handguns striking the suspect.

Around 9:35 p.m. on April 30, 2016, Officers Jesse Murphy and David Lagesse responded to radio call of domestic violence. The comments of the call stated the suspect, Jose Marion, was locked in his bedroom with his girlfriend and could be heard assaulting her. When the officers entered the apartment they found the victim in a bedroom. She appeared to have been strangled and was not responsive. While attending to the victim, Marion was seen at the top of a staircase in the hallway. The officers saw that Marion was holding a knife in each hand. The officers ordered Marion to drop the knives; however, Marion ran toward the officers. The officers fired at Marion, striking him. The officers were able to quickly remove the victim from the apartment.

LAPD officers immediately requested paramedics to render emergency medical aid to the suspect and the victim. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and the victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) personnel responded to the scene to interview the officers, victims, and witnesses. In addition, forensics experts collected physical evidence for testing and laboratory analysis. The results of FID’s extensive investigation will be presented to the Chief of Police and the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners to determine whether the use of deadly force and the tactics employed by the officers complied with LAPD’s strict policies and procedures.
