Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department Central Traffic Division detectives are asking for the public’s help in providing any information that would lead to the identification and arrest of the suspect involved in a hit and run collision that fatally injured a pedestrian.
On Wednesday, February 22, 2017 around 6:45 p.m., Hollenbeck Area officers responded to the 5200 block of Alhambra Avenue for a traffic collision. The investigation revealed that a collision occurred when the victim, a 32-year-old female Hispanic, was attempting to cross Alhambra Avenue just east of Endicott Street. She was standing in the middle of Alhambra Avenue, waiting for eastbound traffic clear, when she was stuck on her left side by a vehicle traveling westbound on Alhambra Avenue. At the time of collision, the victim was holding her 2-year-old son with her right arm. The child was launched approximately 50 feet and landed near the middle of the roadway. The mother was launched into the eastbound lanes of Alhambra Avenue and then was struck a second time by a 2004 Nissan Frontier pick-up truck. The driver of the pick-up truck remained at the scene and was questioned and released. The driver of the first vehicle fled the scene without identifying himself or herself and did not render aid to the victim, as required by law.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the mother dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The 2-year-old suffered numerous lacerations to his head and was transported to a local area hospital for observation.
The suspect vehicle is described as possibly a Honda SUV with damage to the left side. The investigation is ongoing.
On April 15, 2015, the City Council amended the Los Angeles Administrative Code and created a Hit and Run Reward Program Trust Fund. A reward of up to $50,000 is available to community members who provide information leading to the offender’s identification, apprehension, and conviction or resolution through a civil compromise.
