Los Angeles: LAPD Southwest Area detectives are announcing the arrest of a suspect for attempted murder.
On Sunday, September 4, 2011, at approximately 2:05a.m., officers from LAPD Southwest Division and the University of Southern California Department of Public Safety (USCDPS) responded to a shooting call in the 1200 block of West 37th Place in Los Angeles. During a party which hosted about 60 students, two students interrupted a theft in progress and were shot by the suspect.
During interviews, detectives found out that one of the students who was shot, a female who was shot in the finger, recognized her fellow classmate who was shot in the stomach was quickly losing consciousness. Heroically, she immediately began CPR and enabled the LAFD paramedics to continue with their already life-saving efforts. When interviewed, the other student who was shot, a male, indicated that as he was losing consciousness and felt his chest rise as if someone was breathing for him.
Photographs, video and digital evidence during the party were taken and detectives used those photographs to identify the suspect through criminal resources. Subsequent follow-ups led to the recovery of key evidence in the case and positive identifications.
After the shooting occurred, the combined resources of the LAPD, USCDPS and Signal Hill Police Department led to the successful arrest of a male suspect, 21 year-old Tyson Tiree Smith of Signal Hill.
The investigation is ongoing and detectives are still seeking assistance from any of the witnesses and participants at the party who are willing to come forward with additional information.
Two counts of attempted murder have been filed against Smith, who was booked at the LAPD’s 77th Division Jail Section.
The female student victim was treated at the scene and released for a gunshot wound to her finger. The second victim was transported to a local area hospital and was released today after an 11-day hospital stay.
The names of victims are being withheld.

On Sunday, September 4, 2011, at 2:05a.m., officers from LAPD Southwest Division and the University of Southern California Department of Public Safety (USCDPS) responded to a shooting call in the 1200 block of West 37th Place. The investigation revealed a black male, 19-23 years of age, 6’3” tall, wearing a blue baseball cap, and dark clothing, fired a single round from a small caliber handgun striking victim #2 in the finger and victim #1 in the chest.
The victims were transported to a local hospital and treated for their injuries. The victims are in stable condition. The victims are students at the University of Southern California.
The name of the victims will be withheld.
