"46 Year-Old Pedestrian Killed in Traffic Collision in Central Area"
Los Angeles: On Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at approximately 4:20 p.m., 66 year-old Young Seo Choo, a resident of Los Angeles, was driving in the far right lane southbound on Flower Street approaching 12th Street in his 1990 Toyota truck. As he arrived to 12th Street, Mr. Choo attempted to make a left turn to go eastbound on 12th Street by crossing two lanes of traffic into the far left turn lane. Unfortunately, Choo collided with a 1985 Toyota Supra travelling in the lane next to him southbound on Flower Street. The impact of the collision caused Choo’s truck to slide in a southeasterly direction and collide with 46 year-old Brenda Yvonne Peterson who was standing on the median barrier directly adjacent to the left hand turn lane. Ms. Peterson had crossed half the length of the crosswalk and was waiting for a green light to finish crossing Flower Street to the sidewalk.
Choo’s truck dragged Peterson the length of the intersection along 12th Street in a southeasterly direction, then collided with a concrete barrier on the southwest corner of the intersection. The impact of the truck against the barrier caused the truck to become airborne and land on Peterson’s body. Responding City of Los Angeles Fire Department personnel pronounced Peterson dead at the scene. Choo was transported to California Hospital where he was treated and released for complained of pain to his right shoulder.
Choo was subsequently taken into custody and booked at Central Jail for Vehicular Manslaughter [Penal Code Section §192(c) (3)].
