On April 16, 2022, Central Area patrol officers responded to a radio call of a, “violent person with mental illness armed with a knife and wrench”, in the 200 block of West 6th Street. When officers arrived, the subject had barricaded himself in his apartment bathroom with several knives and a hammer. A standoff ensued for more than an hour as Central officers attempted to talk the subject into surrendering peacefully. The subject stopped responding to the officers’ attempts at verbal communication, so the officers made entry into the bathroom. Officers observed that the subject was conscious and breathing but in a state of medical emergency. Officers removed the subject from the bathroom and took him into custody.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics were at scene and immediately responded to the subject. The subject was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
A slide from a semi-automatic handgun was recovered in the subject’s clothing by medical staff. A lower receiver of a handgun was discovered during a subsequent search of the subject’s apartment.
Force Investigation Division (FID) detectives responded to the scene and are investigating this incident.
