Los Angeles: On Saturday, September 6, 2003, Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton will conduct a formal inspection of the Los Angeles Police Reserve Corps. This inspection will showcase the strength and professionalism of the Department’s Reserve Corps.
In 1947, the City Council enacted an ordinance that established the Los Angeles Police Reserve Corps. The mission of the Reserve Corps is to augment the strength of the Department’s field force, to help decrease crime, and to provide citizens the opportunity to become directly involved in the community by joining the Department. The Reserve Corps consists of 747 reserve officers (Line, Technical and Specialist) who unselfishly donate their time, services, and expertise to the Department. Line Reserve Officers are sworn peace officers who work field patrol assignments, and Technical Reserve Officers are sworn peace officers who work administrative assignments. Specialist Reserve Officers are non-sworn volunteers who provide expert consultation and support in various areas such as cultural awareness, police training and education, computer programming, and public affairs.
Reserve officers are members of the community who epitomize the philosophy of community policing. Last year, reserve officers donated over 204,000 hours of police services to the Department, which is equivalent to the number of hours worked by 104 full-time police officers. The value of the police services provided by the Reserve Corps was valued at over $7,000,000. The Department’s reserve program continues to grow today, and the value of the donated services increases with each new reserve officer. This inspection is dedicated to the memories of Reserve Policeman George B. Mogle (1946) and Technical Reserve Officer Stuart Taira (1983) who sacrificed their lives in the service of their community. Clearly, the Los Angeles Police Reserve Corps is a valuable Department component that provides a substantial benefit to the Department and the City.
