Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger, Director, Office of Operations
Mr. Frank Pegeuros, President, DARE America

WHY:
In 1983, the LAPD launched the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program, a strategy designed to help prevent drug abuse by youth.  Over the years, DARE became one of the principal means for the LAPD to create positive interactions between officers and the community.  Since its early beginnings, DARE has expanded to more than 40 law enforcement agencies nationwide as well as to scores of nations around the world.

Because of his commitment to youth, Chief Charlie Beck made a conscious decision to renew the original partnership that began the movement.  As a result, twenty-nine LAPD officers recently received 80-hours of advanced DARE Officer Training and will soon be assigned to various schools throughout the greater Los Angeles region providing valuable instruction to young people concerning the best way to live productive lives and make important contributions to their communities.

The graduating officers, along with those from other law enforcement personnel from around the nation, completed the grueling instructional course including curriculum design, classroom management, philosophy of education and culminated with actual classroom instruction of local fifth grade classes.
