Dual Agency Gunfire Reduction Campaign Proves Successful

Los Angeles: In recent years, a significant number of people throughout Los Angeles County have celebrated New Year’s Eve in an extremely dangerous way by firing their guns into the air.

Since 1989, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), have joined forces to stop the indiscriminate gunfire and to educate the public about the dangers and dire consequences of this irresponsible act.

The Gunfire Reduction Campaign included the display of thousands of “Don’t Shoot” flyers, a series of public service announcements on television and radio stations, and a poster and essay contest that included the participation of more than 2,000 elementary, middle and high school students.

As a direct result of the Gunfire Reduction Campaign, the LAPD and LASD are proud to announce that on December 31, 2004, and into the early morning hours of January 1, 2005, there were NO reported deaths due to illegal celebratory gunfire. In addition, 25 guns were seized and 23 people were arrested for negligent discharge of a firearm.

Despite limited resources, the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the LAPD and LASD has again proven successful. On behalf of Chief William J. Bratton and Sheriff Lee Baca, a heartfelt thank you is extended to members of the media and the community of Los Angeles for supporting our efforts to reduce and ultimately eliminate celebratory gunfire.
