Fatal Hit-and-Run Traffic Collision NR20164jc

Van Nuys: Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that occurred on Oxnard Street and Cantaloupe Avenue. On Wednesday, July 8, 2020, around 8:55 p.m., a gray Saturn sedan was travelling eastbound on Oxnard Street when it collided with a pedestrian as they were crossing at Oxnard Street and Cantaloupe Avenue. The driver of the gray Saturn failed to stop, render aid, and identify themselves as required by law. The driver was last seen driving eastbound on Oxnard Street with extensive damage to the front of the vehicle. The Saturn’s sideview mirror and other identifiable vehicle parts were located at the scene of the incident.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the male pedestrian dead. He was described as a male approximately 70-years-old and resident of Van Nuys. His identity will not be released until next of kin has been notified.

Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves.

On April 15, 2015, the City Council amended the Los Angeles Administrative Code and created a Hit and Run Reward Program Trust Fund. A reward of up to $50,000 is available to community members who provide information leading to the offender’s identification, apprehension, and conviction or resolution through a civil compromise.
