The officers involved in the below officer-involved shooting has been identified as Detective Craig and uniformed Police Officer II + II Kevin Cotter.
Los Angeles: A lone gunman armed with a handgun shot at a number of people, injuring three at the intersection of Sunset and Vine. The gunman was stopped when police shot him.
Friday, December 9, 2011 at approximately 10:15 a.m., Tyler Brehm, male White, 26-year-old resident of Los Angeles, armed himself with a handgun and went to the intersection of Sunset and Vine in Hollywood and began shooting at people as they drove through the intersection. Brehm then walked Southbound on Vine Street, continuing to shoot at vehicles as they tried to avoid him and leave the area. On Vine Street south of Sunset, Brehm approached a Male Black, 40 years old, who was sitting in his parked vehicle and shot him multiple times, striking him in the face and upper torso. He continued shooting at vehicles and in the air when he was confronted by two LAPD officers, one, an off-duty motor officer working on a movie set, the second, a plain clothes detective who was on duty in the area.
The officers ordered the suspect to stop and drop his weapon. The suspect pointed his weapon at the motor officer and an officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect fell to the ground and was immediately taken into custody. Officers immediately called for medical assistance.
LAFD personnel responded and transported the victim to a local hospital where he was listed in guarded and critical condition. Brehm was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators discovered two additional victims, both with minor injuries. One, with a graze wound to his left thigh, resulting from the bullet passing through his car door. The second victim received minor cuts and abrasions to his face, when a bullet struck the driver door where it met the window. Both victims received medical treatment at the scene. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Investigators have not yet determined the motive for the crime. There were no officers injured as a result of this incident.
Force Investigation Division responded and is investigating the Officer Involved Shooting. West Bureau Homicide is responsible for the attempt murder investigation and Robbery Homicide Division is responsible for the crime against the officers.
The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use of force policy which states that officers’ use of force actions must be objectively reasonable. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the Officer Involved Shooting.
