Wilmington: On January 27, 2018, around 11:27 a.m., officers assigned to Harbor Area Patrol responded to a radio call for a juvenile group in a park. While checking the area, the officers observed the suspect, identified as Salvador Miramontes, enter the roadway on a bicycle. Miramontes dismounted his bicycle, simulated drawing a handgun and took what the officers described as a shooting stance in their direction. Miramontes’ actions resulted in an Officer -Involved-Shooting (OIS) when the passenger officer fired at him through the police vehicle windshield. Miramontes was not struck by gunfire and the officers took him into custody without further incident. No firearm or weapon was recovered at scene. No officers were injured during this incident.

LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. A representative from the Office of the Inspector General responded and monitored the scene investigation.

The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with the LAPD’s policies and procedures.
