Hit and Run Suspect Kills 11 year-old girl; Injures 2

 
Los Angeles: On Friday, August 15, 2003, at about 8:25 p.m., a fatal hit and run, auto vs. pedestrian traffic collision occurred on Figueroa Street and 120th Street in the Southeast Area.
The first collision occurred when a 1991 Acura Legend, which was driven by 21 year-old Gregorio Monroy was travelling southbound on Figueroa Street approaching Imperial Highway when he veered over the double lines onto on coming traffic and collided with a Ford Mustang traveling north on Figueroa Blvd. The driver of the Acura Legend continued southbound on Figueroa Street without identifying himself or rendering emergency assistance as required per State Law.
The second collision occurred when the driver of the Acura Legend attempted to flee the primary collision. The driver of the Acura Legend accelerated his vehicle southbound on Figueroa Street through the intersection of 120th Street, where he failed to stop for a red light and struck an 11 year-old female Hispanic and her father, a 42 year-old male Hispanic, while they were in the crosswalk at 120th Street. Once again, the driver of the Acura Legend continued southbound on Figueroa Street without identifying himself or rendering aid.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported the 11 year-old girl and her father to a local hospital. The 11 year-old died as a result of her injuries and her father was treated and listed in stable condition.
South Traffic Detectives conducted an investigation a short distance from where the second collision occurred and located the Acura Legend and the suspect. Gregory Monroy was arrested for 187 (a) PC (Murder).
